Google Search Strategies

Your personal Viking Google Guide on How to find things on the internet:
These "tips" may of course be applied to any search engine, like AltaVista, Cuil, Yahoo, Ask, Mamma Metasearch - whatever floats your boat. It's just that Google makes such a good verb!

General Search:
Be accurate. Include the words that you already know about the subject and what kind of information you’re after. Do that instead of just random keywords to narrow your search. Remember the difference between what you know already and what you want to know.
“Prince Septimus dental record and licence plate”
“Prince Septimus seventh son of the king of Stormhold”
Use questionform to easier access pages that are created to help, like DIY pages,
"How to delete cookies from my intestines"
"How to decapitate shrimp"
"How to stop spelling inconsideriderideriderate"
or, just Keep it simple.
"Tits"

Multilingual Searches:
If you are looking for the Norwegian translation for something English, start by Googling the word first by the English name, then either;
1. Look for a Latin name or definition for the word/thing – search for this on Norwegian pages, like Wikipedia. This is particularily handy if it is an animal or plant in question.
“Thyme” -> “Thymus vulgaris” -> ”Timian”.

2. Look for an English to Norwegian dictionary – like Freedict. To find one just Google “English to Norwegian online dictionary” for example. This should be fairly foolproof!

3. Look for a thesaurus, I recommend http://www.thesaurus.com/ and try to find a similar word to translate instead, if your previous word had no obvious translation into your designated language of choice.

Music Search:
If you are looking for song lyrics or the name of a song, type in the bit that you have heard (or think you have heard) and add “lyrics”. Gladly enter the name of the artist as well, if you know it. This proves very effective in most cases.
“My boobs are okay lyrics”
“My boobs are okay lyrics Lene Alexandra”

This way it’s easier to exclude random referring to a song, and increases your chance of finding the information you’re looking for.
If you are looking for an artist or a band that you’ve heard or seen, but can’t remember the name of, use keywords.

"Great concert standing on the bongo drums possibly high" -> "Ralph Myerz & The Jack Herren Band"
“Russian ballad singer” -> “Theodore Bikel"
"Music for sad people" -> "Limp Bizkit/My Chemical Romance/Sum 41/Wham"

Hello world!

Oh Hello! I feel like such an idiot for not updating more often, I have (actually) been blogging for several years (even though I am not sure this even counts as "several years" - seeing I don't post very often at all, and when I do it is usually not relevant to the concept of this blog or anything, this being said if this blog had a particular concept).

So, what is all this
www.cuil.com search engine schmuffle all about? Well actually, I'm fairly up to date! They launched just a couple of hours ago. But anyway. Apparently it's an old Irish word for knowledge, and it searches through three times as many pages as Google and ten times as many as Microsoft (according to Cuil). So, to put this to the test I tried googling "Thoughts of a Viking" - and my blog (this blog, the one here - that you're reading, or maybe you just stopped reading, but I wont know, and then you wouldn't know that I said it, wrote it, or well - er, anyway) came first. I'd say that's a good thing! So as a comparison I cuil-ed "Thoughts of a Viking" to see what came up there. And you know what?

I got seven pages of results and I wasn't even there! Can you believe it?! Well, obviously, I wont let this put me off from using Cuil, because you kno
w it looks kind of sweet with its pimped up black and blue layout and the images and categories. And to be honest I just don't feel comfortable about monopolies, everyone are going on and on about Google (don't get me wrong, I'm actually a Google-geek (What? What just happened? Er. Half my post just disappeared right after I published it. Now what on earth is that supposed to mean? What the flux? ehm, I'll duplicate it the best I can then, I guess.) damn you Google, I was in the middle of a praise! Duuh, don't bite the hand that feeds you, sweetcheeks, you really shouldn't! Well, as I was saying--

I have Gmail, iGoogle (frontpage), Google Calendar and I blog through Google (yes, this here blog) and what about YouTube? (Or should I say GooTube?). So it feels nice with a little breath of fresh air here on the intarwebnets, we need it! And I'm sure Google is up for the snazzy challenge. Good luck Cuil! (It's pronounced "cool". Yeah, I know! Cheesy!)

This is from Lofoten! Woot! It was the view from the cabins where we stayed (this June).

Google Ads

I wont have any of that "I think your Christmas-pimping of this blog has gone a bit overboard, missus". I just wont have it. Alright? Christmas is only once a year, in case you didn't notice. And if I want to turn my blog into an explosion of colours, stars, glitter, sparkles, ribbons, hearts, suns and rainbows - I flippin will. So I did. I even added christmas stockings.

Oh! You know what happened? - I was peacefully dredging through Glitter-Graphics.com (one of my very favourite websites) I suddenly noticed that the computer-generated Google-advertisement said, right next to "MySpace Layout",

Ads by Google
Hot latina banging a midget
MySpace Layouts
Blog Graphics
Free Image Hosting

I don't think I saw any, but I ran to the bathroom and washed my eyes in chlorine just in case, because you never know what you might find along your way through the intarnet.

Toraaa! TOOOOORAAAAA!!

- JAA?!

I don't know your thoughts these days
We're strangers in an empty space
I don't understand your heart
It's easier to be apart
We might as well be strangers in another town
We might as well be living in a another time
We might as well
We might as well be strangers
Be strangers

- Keane "We Might As Well Be Strangers" ("Hopes and Fears" 2004)
a song that makes me think of many things!

TORA -Temporally Ordered Routing Algorithm
Torah - the Five Books of Moses
TOra - a database administration and development tool
Tora! Tora! Tora! - a 1970 movie about the Attack on Pearl Harbor.
Tora Olafsdotter, better known as Ice is a DC Comics superheroine from a past age of the Justice League
Tora - Japanese word for tiger

Seen something much like this in my blog before? I think you might have, yes. Maybe even twice.

The train to nowhere!

See strip here

I get a cartoon each day on my google frontpage, and this one I liked in particular.
Visit Pearls before Swine on livejournal!

In other news, it has snowed a lot in Oslo the past few days and it was -10 C at 8 this morning. All envy my stepdad which is skiing today while everyone is at work.

Well gogger

Google blogging is indeed very strange.
When testing some new layouts on my blog today, I clicked a button that returned the layout-editing to the same system as it used to be.
Then, out of nowhere something -i thought was long lost - reappeared!
My original blog-layout from just before christmas! It just randomly popped back and was all in order and everything, something I found very strange of course.

Do not get over-excited though, I am quite sure that I'm going to replace this layout with a new layout. I am such a fan of changes!

So, that strange blogging-experience is going to pass, personally I am not feeling any strange at all myself today, I'm just licking out the crumbs of an empty bag of Snack a' Jacks and listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers. Today I wore a big furry hat to school, it is a very nice hat, I must be careful so my sister does not take this hat and use it herself. She is coming home from her holiday today, so I have hidden everything I want to keep.
My bronze boots, my furry hat, the red coat, my purse and I must remember to rescue some underwear too.
She is like a machine, only less merciful.

ze labels!

Well, I suddenly found another feature assosiated with google-blogging which I can enjoy. Well, it's got to do with labels, still. But it's actually quite amusing, to the bottom right you should be able to see all the different labels under which I'm posting, sorted with the most frequent on top.

I'm also moving the poll from the sidebar and into this post (if you've even noticed a poll) because it's making such a mess on the right here.

yesyes.

I've tried!

But the new google-blogging it denying me to get my drawn header up, it's refusing to admit that I ever had one up there - ever. And it will not let me go back to the original kind of blogging.
I do like these labels and all the structures, the haste, ease and elegance of the new google-way of blogging, but I wish it would not be so incredibly stubborn all the time.

In other news, I've hid my conditioner because my sister is coming home (it's a Bumble & Bumble Thickening Hair Conditioner) and now I don't seem to find it! Well, I guess since I can't, neither can she. So it's all good really, as long as I can retrieve it when xmas is over, something which is quite unlikely - but at least she will not have put her grubby hands on it!

When helping a man out at work, he was buying knives, he asked me a question about the box-set, and I make a thinking-expression - naturally. And he laughed at me! I do know that my facial-expressions can be amusing, but he laughed! I could answer the question of course. yes yes.

Today I'm going to go visit my grandmother at the hospital, I made her a nice card.

So today I changed the blog to Google

Yes, I'm now using my Google-account to blog. There are of course a lot of positive features, which I am certain I'll get back to in due time - by that I mean; whenever I find out what it is.

I can post with labels...

pling!
